Things I Figured Out While I Was Walking The Dog

Swaying The Crowd

Swaying the Crowd

Here again on the same walk, after reading the same book by Barry, I noted in the very same chapter another point. Here he was talking about “crowd crystals”, a thought written about by Elias Canetti in his book Crowds and Power. Basically a “crowd crystal” is the central impetus for the mood of the crowd, a small group of people that create a sentiment that ripples outward into the masses. Again, this is exactly what I’ve been talking about.

The world, it seems, has become ruled by an increasingly negative wave of attitude between everyone around us. No, I don’t mean you are the negative one, but you may very well have felt exactly that thought yourself in traffic or at the store. Suddenly, everyone seems to think that “Me first”, “I have a reason why I need it more than you….”, “Get out of my way….”, and “It is your fault….” are acceptable ways of speaking and or behaving when interacting with the world. Wow! I need a bigger notebook, so that I can write down all these peoples’ mothers’ phone numbers! I am up for the challenge, and for whatever it is worth, I sincerely hope that I don’t need anybody you know’s phone number, but if by chance, that is the case; do me a favor, get the number and make the call for me.

So here we sit, shaking our heads at the rudeness, the arrogance, and the “I’m special!” people. Well, I don’t know about you, but there are days that I wish that I could be special too. You know, when you wonder about breaking the rules, because you’re in a hurry. Don’t do it! It will make you feel even worse. You will only be giving the rude and the rule breakers license to keep doing it. They will point and say that they are following you.

What we need to do is counteract the ripple from the “crystal”. We need to create a new crystal, one that sends a positive message about fair play and respecting our fellow man. Will it be easy? No, it will be hard work. It’ll make you wonder at times if there is any good effect at all. You may even wish that you could jump ship and join the guys that are getting away with something for nothing, at everyone else’s expense. Don’t do it. If we all make a positive push for change and keep pushing, it will move the crowd in a positive way. Just as water seeks ground level, positive waves can cause positive change. No revolution is easily won, but I think that it is a cause worth fighting for.
